Rethinking the MANIFESTO

Rethinking some of the work done in Wells to outline what we do at Broken Forests Fireweed and some of our common goals.

Back in August, 2025, we came up with several “suggestions” for artists in the group to consider when participating in Broken Forests Creative Actions. This one is taken from a transcription of the conference at Wells, B.C.

BFF is interested in showing that Creative Actions are also working toward solutions to environmental concerns, imbalances, threats, and atrocities.

a.      Concepts and themes that have evolved from nature should not include materials or concepts that are not related to nature (plastics and other manufactured refuse materials are more related to Industrialism and Capitalism than they are to forests, rivers or oceans. If we use these foreign materials we are not perceived as being a part of a solution to an environmental problem or concern).

b.     The obverse of this would be that BFF artists may include in their works and performances, materials gleaned from nature, but only to the extent that those repositioned and/or repurposed materials and organic processes are respected, returned when possible and/or “offered” to the artist working with that rock, tree, waterfall, mushroom, or organism of the forest.

The paragraph in red was added today as a talking point for the group as we approach the Broken Forests Fireweed/Flora do Fogo, Endangered Forest in Brazil and Canada Residency and Exhibition series.
