Gwen MacGregor confirms participation in Broken Forests Fireweed/Flora do Fogo exhibitions

Installation (still untitled) – This installation will consist of a series of new small objects that are part of my ongoing project Treelines – here and there. This project started in 2017 with the creation of representational small crocheted trees that have been placed on land and photographed in locations that have experienced extractive logging or mining practices. To date the locations have been in Canada and Scotland. Fifty trees and the photographs have been exhibited together in a number of public museums in Canada. As the project continues I have developed trees that are intentionally dystopic, working to resist a reading as nostalgic objects. A series of these is currently in an exhibition entitled Material.After.Life at the Remai Modern in Saskatoon, Canada. For TOTE I will be bringing a new selection of objects that continue the use of crocheted recycled plastic bags and clothing. They are reminiscent of fungi or tree stumps but are also intentionally dystopic, somewhat alien looking. They have been created to allow for additional natural materials gathered while in Brazil. They will be placed on the floor and towards the window. Then on the outside immediately next to the window more of the objects will be placed in the pond that is right outside. Together they will create a single installation moving from inside the gallery to the outdoor space.

Photos

I will present four photos (two pairs) in Foto Ponto and the university gallery. They are also part of the Treelines – here and there project.

These are part of the ongoing series from Treelines – here and there. To date the photos have been presented large format (4’x3’) front mount on plexi. For Foto Ponto I am suggesting they printed as large as possible within the context of the space and group exhibition context.  They should be shown side by side or one above the other.

For PUC Visual Art Gallery two images will be printed on cloth in Canada and brought in a roll. They can be hung together anywhere in the gallery.
